Have you tried to use strace(1) to see where it hangs?  (Warning:
Extensive output.)

        strace beta

and look at the last lines of output.  If it hangs in a
wait()-statement you may try to run strace with -f (See "man strace"
for more info.) to see what the children are doing.  If you haven't
got strace, get it and install it!  (BTW, it is called truss on
Solaris, where strace does something different.)

If you don't get any further, you may send the last 20 (or something)
lines here, to Mjølner, and/or to SuSE.
