True, but many of the limitations of plain old messy-DOS can be overcome by using DJGPP. It was relatively painless to compile some other language systems with it, e.g. Smalltalk, Python, Scheme... I guess there isn't a plain vanilla non-windowed version of Beta around? A small Beta interpreter would be cool to learn the language.
