All major topics are relevant, including but not restricted to: methods, languages, applications, distribution, databases, patterns, semantics, frameworks, metrics, reuse, testing, graphics, user interfaces, and numerics. PhD students both in industry and in academia are encouraged to=20 attend, to ensure a broad, unconfined discussion. The workshop is=20 an opportunity for PhD students to meet and share their research,=20 and to discover commonalities in research and studentship.=20 The workshop is organized by PhDOOS, the international network of PhD Students in Object-Oriented Systems. PhDOOS was initiated during ECOOP'91 in Geneva, Switzerland, and today it has about 125 members from all over the world. There is a mailing list and a web site. More information about the web site is given below. Moreover, it is a tradition to strengthen the internal workshop network by dining together after the regular programme of the day. Topics and work practices =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D The workshop is divided into plenary sessions and subgroup sessions. Among other things, the plenary session will feature=20 PhDOOS-oriented keynote speeches by Eric Jul, U. of Copenhagen,=20 and Dave Thomas, OTI.=20 The subgroups will be formed before the workshop, based on the research interests of the participants. At the workshop, the main part of the technical programme consists of presentations and discussions in subgroups. Results and summaries from the subgroup discussions will be presented at a plenary session. Accepted works will be made available to all participants in advance. How to apply =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D If you are not a member of the PhDOOS network, please become a member. =20 This can be done by submitting a web form or sending email as specified=20 on . Sending a one-page (500 word) abstract of your dissertation research is part of this process. If you are already a member, consider renewing the abstract. You can apply for a short (15 minute) presentation of your research based on the abstract alone. In this case, please send an email to=20 Erik Ernst no later than May 15th, stating that you want to participate=20 in the workshop and give a presentation based on your abstract. Alternatively, you can submit a (3-8 page) position paper for review and give a longer (30 minute) presentation. In this case, please send=20 an email to Erik Ernst no later than May 15th, stating that you want=20 to participate in the workshop and give a presentation based on your=20 position paper. Please attach the position paper to this email,=20 preferably in dvi, PDF, PostScript, or HTML format. Notification of acceptance will be given no later than June 15th. The purpose of the position paper is to give the other participants=20 an overview of your work. To be accepted, the position paper should=20 be relevant to the field of Object-Orientation, should reflect your PhD research, and should be readable. Abstracts and group summaries will be published in ECOOP's workshop proceedings. Position papers will be published in a separate workshop report. We encourage everybody to submit a poster to the poster session. We will provide an opportunity to present these posters at the workshop as well. Web site =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D The workshop has a dedicated web site reachable from . It contains the call for participation, a list of participants, their abstracts and papers, a timetable of the workshop activities, and more. =46unding =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D This workshop receives financial support from AITO (http://iamwww.unibe.ch/ECOOP/AITO/). This enables us to support a few people who wish to participate but cannot afford it otherwise. Please check the web site for more information.
