Is anybody using the MacEnv to do anything useful, or >is the Mac version of BETA just a curiosity? No it is not just a curiosity. The DEVISE Hypermedia system for Mac is built using MacEnv. Refer for instance to CACM Febraury issue for papers on the system. You can also get more info from my WWW page. I enclose a demo version order form below. >So far the only demo app that I've been able to get my hands on is a >minimal app that just draws ovals on the screen and takes up 850K of disk >space. Demo programs are usually small, and they have to include all the basic stuff such as the garbage collector, the mac eventhandler and so forth just to show the simple functionality. I have also seen Lisp and even C++ environments with a footprint of 1 MB disk space for a minimal application writing "Hello world!" to a window. The DHM system mentioned above takes up 2.5 MB of disk space, but it includes several editors, a quicktime movieplayer, browsers, and AppleEvent communication stuff for integrating third party applications. Finally, it includes a persistent objectstore for storing the hypermedia structures. The 2.5 MB application size is not that bad compared to the new releases of popular applications for Mac. >Has anybody written any more substantial programs with it?
